The Serenity House opened its doors on May 13, 2002. Colquitt County Serenity House Inc. was inspired at least in part by the unexpected death of a beloved community resident (Kim Nunez) who was shot and killed by her estranged husband just a block away from her place of employment and within a block of the police department. A county commissioner heard the gunshot and witnessed her vehicle crash into the wall of the Moultrie Police Department. Her young child was also in the vehicle and witnessed everything.
The residents of Colquitt County realized a need for a safe haven for women and children of domestic violence. Since its beginning, Serenity House has provided everything from basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter to helping families with legal aid and the resources to help reestablish their independence, self-worth and self-esteem.
